Finally, the solution for the FD's biggest issues is here! Introducing our BRAND NEW Stainless Steel OEM Replacement twin turbos for the FD RX-7!
Why stay twins?
Anyone who has ever driven an FD with working sequential turbos will tell you that it's an incredibly unique and rewarding experience. From the ground up, the FD was designed around the idea of a linear powerband that is consistent up until the sky-high redline. The twin turbo system, although complicated, plays a MASSIVE part in forming that identity. The power delivery is predictable, linear, and smooth. The sequential turbos are tuned to work with the gear ratios of the FD: rev the motor out to redline, shift to the next gear and you’ll land slightly above the magic transition point of 4500 RPM where boost is maxed out. The car from the factory was built as a specific experience for the driver, turbos, motor, and transmission were tuned to work together in harmony from low to high RPM!
There are a few issues with them though! Given that even the newest FDs are over 20 years old, the OEM turbos are just about all either showing their age, broken or on their way out. Mazda's factory units are now all NLA, leading to people having to re-use what original components remain, low nickel content cast iron turbos at this point are heavily cracked, and most are not good candidates for rebuilds. What many people do is immediately abandon the twins to go with a big single turbo. This is, inevitably, going to change the driving experience drastically by introducing additional turbo lag. Keeping the twin system keeps that aspect of the car’s identity and driving experience as intended.
Keeping the twin turbo system can be a great idea for anyone that is aiming for an “OEM+” build, as it helps preserve the value of your investment, and keeps the car in line with what it was intended to be. Plus, having a modernized take on the same ideas that Mazda had when designing the FD just feels right!
These are direct drop-in replacement for OEM twin turbos, and are Compatible with OEM ECU, and all OEM components from the twin turbo system
